De Copper Familie van Rottingdean in Sussex heeft wortels in het traditionele lied van ten minste twee honderd jaar oud.
Hun zeldzame zuidelijk Engelse harmonie is het best te horen op de opnames uit eind jaren vijftig.
“Spencer the Rover” werd verzameld door Bob Copper in 1954 van ene Jim Barrett, in “the Fox” in Noord-Waltham, UK.
De Coppers namen dit op op 10.08.1958. Dit is de oudste opname van de song, gezongen door Bob, Ron, Jill en John Copper.
Het is van deze opname dat John Martyn de song leerde.
Shirley Collins zong dit eveneens. Haar kommentaar :
“This song could be the synopsis for a very considerable 19th century epic novel. I imagine Spencer with ruddy cheeks, black sideburns and leather gaiters. The unsurpassed domestic bliss in the last chapter fadeout has everyone beaming happily. The lines of the verse are very long, and I appreciate the sound sense of Bob and Ron Copper of Sussex in sharing the third line out between the two of them. Dolly’s counter-melody is not in any way counter to the spirit of the song.”
